special treatment

"But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers." (James 2:9)

This verse shows up after an example between a poor man and a rich man being treated differently in church, and that makes sense - no one should be more "valued" in the church (or in society as a whole) for being of a certain socioeconomic status, race/culture, gender, etc. or hindered for not being of a certain social group.

But what if I'm wondering about interpersonal relationships? It's impossible (and it's probably not encouraged) to love everyone equally, but is it also selfish to want certain relationships to be more special than others? Is it just the "Love Me" coming out again?

And here I am again, focusing on the micro-level concerns rather than asking for the macro-level vision...sighs.
