Remember back to October or November of your senior year of high school?
Or maybe even to January?
Remember being super nervous about your first college interviews? Or maybe, nervous about the interview for the college of your dreams? The one you've wanted to go to for the past 5, 10, 15 years of your life? (Or 3 months after college visits.)
Do you remember what you wore? An ill-fitting suit set from your mom? A stuffy tie that you only reserve for Christmas? Maybe just jeans?
Well...THIS has gone just too far. I always knew the college application process was ridiculous, but this woman and her price for advice AND her clothing choices are all just ridiculous. (Eric Furda from the Penn admissions office is mentioned, ha. DP people and readers don't really like Furda at all.)
Packaging yourself to get into a "good" college is getting crazier and crazier with each passing year. What's funny, though, as I discussed with a friend the other day, is that getting into a (good) grad school is so much more important. And yes, I admit, I'm guilty. 110% guilty of striving to get into an Ivy League institution and all that fun stuff that made me emo, pessimistic, cynical, and near self-destructive in my last two years of high school.
When did getting into college become such a mind game? Something that requires strategic planning from when you're 8 years old? Seeing my brother have to be on the swim team and then get a private swimming coach to improve faster, take cello lessons and audition for a music organization that will eat up his weekends, get an English tutor so that he'll be ready for the SATs when he's a junior (his math score as of not studying and being in the 7th grade was a 680), and striving to join student government AND STILL maintain a social life (he hangs out more than I ever did in my 18 years before college combined...lol) JUST SO he can become a competitive applicant in the future - it's just RIDICULOUS.
But what can you do? Sometimes, name does matter more than we wish and think it would.

when you put it that way, it is pretty ridiculous. being in college for 2 years makes you forget the crazy shananigans you go through to get here.
oh this reminds me of bad memories
not everyone is like that though. there are chill people. in iowa :P i'm just kidding. but it's true. you do have a point. college admissions is a game where money and status are the two most useful tools.
and really, it never ends. after college it's the grad school, the job market, ah...
LOLLL my mom hired a Spanish conversation tutor to help me with AP Spanish.
WE. WERE. RIDICULOUS.
but she gave me such good clothing advice!
...all the pictures of the "models" in that article somehow dress like every frat boy and sorority slut here.
Hmmmmm
