why so awkward?

Where should I begin? Well first, I guess I'd have to say that I've always liked writing notes on Facebook, so instead of getting them mixed up in between adolescent rants and random surveys about what I ate for lunch and what random songs on my iPod represent my life, I decided to branch off and do my own thing.

The title - "breaking the awkward silence" - I got it from something my pastor made us do this past Sunday. We had to turn to one another and say, "I'm awkward. Are you?" We all laughed as we did this, but yeah, people can be really awkward. What is it about new acquaintances, or maybe not-so-new ones, that makes us feel like we have to fill in every second of our conversations? I certainly feel that need, so I like to just keep talking so the other person won't be quite as burdened. Of course, with my close friends, we can sit there and not speak for a full thirty minutes and feel like we've said everything we needed to say. That's the mark of true friendship: enthusiastic silence. I guess I'm not sure if "enthusiastic" is the right word - I was looking for the opposite of "indifferent." (Caring, compassionate, concerned, interested - they all didn't seem quite right.) Either way, I don't like awkward silences too much because it makes me worry about the other person more than I worry for myself. And since I have so much to say all the time, there's really no need for me to sit in those situations anyway. So even though I can be awkward in general, and so can you - here I go. Breaking your awkward silences, one obnoxious statement at a time.

There's also the awkward silence that comes along when you hear some awfully, tragically terrible news: in cases like that, you say 'I'm sorry, etc.' and what not.

Silence speaks volumes. Audiant silence is what I call it.

I've settled for saying things like 'And here's the awkward silence' which usually lightens it a bit.

I love the silences where you look at the other person and they look at you and then you start laughing for no reason at all.

Or the silence in a museum when everyone has a gasp frozen in their throats upon seeing a giant resurrected dinosaur skeleton.

Or the silence right before the piece ends and the applause starts.

Our world would be so dull without silence.

Meaningful. The word you were looking for was meaningful.

I'm glad you've started a blog. It works much better than those 30-something FB notes, and I love getting a view into your mind. (Not to mention how much I enjoy reading what you write; your style, candid and strong, makes me think I'm talking to you again.)

i love how you mention those "random surveys about ipods or what i had for lunch"...you basically could've said "those annoying and repetitive surveys that vish does"

i've never actually been the blogging reader (with the exception of failblog) but i'll be sure to read this!
